Mead via Warren Ellis by Nazgul

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Warren Ellis has a suggestion.

Sadly they only ship to mainland UK, but if anyone would like to submit a review, we’ll be happy to post it.  I mean, it has the Warren Ellis seal of approval, and that counts for a lot around here.

“Ee’s not *quite* dead…” by Nazgul

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Fear not!  We are still very much alive hereabouts.  As with most hobby sites, occasionally real-life gets in the way of regular updates.  And of course the whole thing about home brewing is there are brief periods of activity, followed by long periods of waiting.

New stuff coming soon.  Prepping a couple of album reviews and more mead-oriented material.  I’m also putting together a Mjolnir necklace with (hopefully)  historically-appropriate beads, so expect pictures as that develops.

A post! Now with mead! by Nazgul

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

It’s been a rather quiet period around The Meadheim lately — various meads have been quietly fermenting/aging, no major folk metal releases or local tours, and I’ve been too busy actually doing craftwork to write about it.  Hopefully this weekend I can catch up a bit.

Last week we racked the three carboys of mead we put up in March, and all is looking good.  Tonight I’m going to filter the second batch of Prison Mead plonk, which should actually turn out drinkable, unlike the first batch.  Never use manuka honey for mead.  Lesson learned.

We’ve had a few new folks sign up to the site.  Welcome!  If you’d like to contribute posts, feel free to drop us an email at the Contact page and I can upgrade your account.

More anon!

blueberry mead update. by nocturnalia

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Today we racked the mead made with blueberry honey into a second carboy to mix it with the pure blueberry juice, and the large tub of local Ontario wild blueberries. The straight mead out of the initial carboy retained a very pleasing amount of the blueberry taste- distinctive. It’s always a toss up as to what the magic of fermentation is going to do to the flavours of the honey- in this case, pure blueberry flavoured liquid gold.

We’re hoping for some secondary fermentation action with the new sugars in the second carboy- but even if we don’t, it still packs the delicious kick that we all know and love. We’ll leave in a few weeks and see what happens. It’s for science!

And, I’m exceptionally pleased to have 23L of dark purple booze in Meadhalla right now. Boozeberry mead. Anything made of honey and fruit must be good for you, right?

That’s what I think, too.

Viking Conference by Mildred-Strange

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The University of Nottingham, England, recently held a symposium on Vikings.

If only MY university would hold a viking symposium.  I love symposia!  The only thing we hold is conferences on how Football  (soccer) has affected the world.  Ok, that’s not the only thing we hold have symposia for, but there sure aren’t any Viking historians.  Sad.

The link above goes to the University of Leicester (where a colleague of mine attended).  One of their profs spoke about Viking naming practices.  Sounds fascinating.

Tyr in Toronto by Mildred-Strange

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Pagan folk metal has been in my periphery for several years, but I’ve never taken notice, because of why it was in my periphery.  Recently Naz suggested a couple of bands to me (I’ve been VERY bored with what I’ve been listening to), and among them was Tyr.  I took a listen and really enjoyed what I heard.  And Lo! Tyr was scheduled to play in Toronto in the near future.

That near future happened tonight.  On behalf of the city of Toronto I’d like to apologize to the members of Tyr for having to play at Sneaky Dee’s.  For those not in the Greater Toronto Area, Sneaky’s is known for dirty punk and even dirtier food (both which are good, if that’s what you’re craving).  It’s not a good venue- tiny stage, bad sound and a long narrow place for the audience.

Naz and I got there as Bolero were finishing up.  He enjoyed what little we heard, but I was too busy getting drink in me, and surveying the land to notice too much, so I’ll take his word that they were good.

Then came Crimson Shadow. Thankfully Naz had the internets in his pocket to entertain him (and you can see the tweets made during this set at the Council of Mead twitter), and I had the view from the window I was standing at to entertain me.  Also, I took this set as a chance to chat with a friend I hadn’t seen in four years.  So, thank you Crimson Shadow, it’s always nice to reconnect, and my disinterest in your set gave me that chance (their music wasn’t my cup of tea, let’s just leave it at that).

Tyr came on after a hilarious interlude where select members of the crowd cheered the sound check.  The played really solidly but  I’m sorry that I can only recall a couple of songs that were played.  I was slightly worried that their harmonies would not translate well to a live show, because that sort of thing can go very bad, very quickly, but they were really fantastic.  And I had to laugh as their sense of humour came throughwhen they played “Hold the Heathen Hammer High”, and prefaced it by saying “It’s Hammer Time”.  I quite literally laughed out loud.  The set wasn’t as long as I’d have liked, but they did grace us with two encore songs, one of which was a Metallica cover.  Short set aside they chose great songs to play live, a good selection from all their albums,  interacted with the crowd really well (even sharing their bottle of rum with one member of the crowd), and sounded fantastic.  They kept the energy high, which inspired a small pit near the end.  I waited until the end to buy a shirt.  I’ll support a band by buying merch, but they’ve got to earn it, and Tyr totally did.  As a final note, I will say this: I don’t care what bands look like.  As long as they sound good that’s what matters.  Because of this I’ve never sought out pictures of Tyr, I just don’t care enough.  But I was told there would be some eye candy.  And Damn.  They put the “men” back in “Fiiiiiiine specimen”.   Too sum up, great energy, great sound, pretty to look at, shitty venue- but at least they served cider.

April Milestone and Madness by Nazgul

Monday, April 5th, 2010

It’s been rather quiet around The Meadberg lately, but things should be about to pick up.  This month alone, I’ll be attending the Finntroll and Eluveitie/Amon Amarth shows, with the possibility of rounding out the month with Týr, although that’s still a wait ‘n’ see.

As well I’m prepping reviews for Czworniak mead, The Compleat Meadmaker, and a couple of items for the Shopping Maul.

I’d also like to announce a small milestone.  In just over two months since launch, Google has upgraded our page rank to PR1, which is a very nice trend.  Thanks to our link partners and viewership.
