Not only my favourite new phrase, but a fantastic new-ish branch of archeology.
A great article on reproducing ancient alcoholic beverages and it’s leading expert Patrick McGovern.

Upon further consideration, I’ve decided to continue work on the byrnie rather than turn it into a jacket sleeve. For the sleeve I’m going to use smaller rings, whereas these are really only good for a truly large piece like a hauberk.
So… pic 1. The beginnings of the body barrel. It’s about 2′x3′ at the moment.
A couple of weeks ago I received a bulk order of pre-cut rings, with no project in mind. Being new to the craft I’d made enough bracer-lets and was ready to move on, and with over 7 thousand 16g 3/8″ rings I decided that starting on a shirt would be the only logical step.
Obviously I’d need a ton more rings for a whole shirt, so now I’m leaning towards something else. I believe I’ll make a sleeve to cover one arm of my leather biker jacket. A chap I knew many years ago had done this and it looked damned good. Plus it’s at least slightly practical, or at least will get use. A shirt or hauberk will just sit in the closet looking pretty and heavy.
Oh I’ll still make a ‘berk — I have plans for a rather interesting design of a byrnie — but that can wait until I’m cutting my own rings. I’ll want it from a heavier gauge wire at any rate.
Pics anon.
EDIT: Hrm. Looks like I’m going to have to wrap my head around crazy stuff like angles and tapering and such. Just when I’d mastered the art of the tube, *now* it gets serious.
